Book Bites: short reads

Contributed by Simon, grade 12 -- Spring 2018

This novel is a modern classic that reeled me into the motives and emotions of the characters. The writing is immensely detailed and rich.

I really enjoyed the storyline and would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a short yet well-written novel.

The book is a touching story and a short read. The plot attracted my attention right away and moved quickly.

It's about the journey of a dog named Buck, who was once a beloved pet but is then forced to be a sled dog in the Yukon and fight for his life.

Behind the emotional story, there is a deeper theme about the problems of civilization.

This novel presents the lives of fifteen dogs that were given the abilities of human thought and consciousness -- and the social problems that emerge from these abilities. The author gives each dog a unique mind and belief, which effortlessly captivates the reader into caring about every dog. This novel is an extremely fast and engaging read. I would recommend it to anyone.

This book relates the true story of a young man named Chris Knight who disconnects from his life at the age of 20 and becomes a hermit in the woods of Maine. The book describes Knight's life, personality, emotions and thought processes throughout his journey as a hermit. It's a relatively quick read that captured and sustained my attention.

Although I didn't like the book initially, when I finished it, I just wanted to re-read it  even though I was busy.

It's  a story about a group of "greasers" in the 1950s who experience a lot of difficulties.  The author seemed to put herself in the characters' shoes, and wrote it in the style of a teenager.

It's a novel about a sixteen year old boy who has just been expelled from a boarding school due to his poor performance. I followed  the mind of Holden and was transformed into his pessimistic point of view on the world.

I loved this book because it brought a whole new perspective on life. I never knew someone could be so full of hate and sadness but be able to describe it so vividly. Catcher in the Rye is a easy read and I would personally recommend the book for its witty, funny nature and moments of grief.
