Survivor is
told in an unconventional count-down manner. Although the novel has been
described as a comedy, it focuses upon serious themes.
The story follows an ex-cult follower as his
life transitions from a humble house worker to a steroid-fuelled-machine-turned-religious
leader. Like Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club, the plot focuses upon a male
protagonist, a quirky female character, and another male character who seems to
be present to cause trouble and uncertainty.
This book initially appealed to me entirely
because of its bright orange cover, but after reading for a couple minutes, I
found myself hooked. The book counts down to the moment of a plane crash and
recounts all the events leading up to it, which are unpredictable and sometimes
seem straight out of a dream.
