Johnny Got His Gun is an antiwar novel that is set immediately after the first World War. As such, it is not a light read, and evokes feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and loneliness.
The main character is a
man who has lost everything except for his mind. The reader is led to follow
his often illogical flow of thoughts and feelings and eventually come to the
realisation that he is little more than a hunk of meat with a mind.
This is not a novel that
I would recommend for entertainment, but it is nonetheless a worthwhile read.
However ,it is my opinion that this story is best suited for a grade 12
audience since parts are quite gory.
